The 21 Levels of Run Dragon Run

A breakdown of every level: dragon speed, frightened duration, scatter phases, Cruise Elroy thresholds, and the 15 wall color themes that cycle as you advance.

Run Dragon Run has effectively unlimited levels, but the difficulty design is anchored to a classic 21-level curve. Beyond Level 21, the parameters stabilize at maximum difficulty and the game becomes a pure survival test. The maze layout never changes — what changes is the speed of the dragons, how long they stay frightened after a power pellet, how often they scatter, and how early Blinky enters Cruise Elroy mode.

Each level is completed by eating all 276 small orbs in the maze. The maze then resets with a fresh set of orbs and the next wall color theme is applied. The maze itself is the classic 28-column by 32-row dungeon with four wrap-around side tunnels and a central ghost house where the dragons spawn.

Speeds: Level 1 dragons ≈ 5.5 tiles/s · Level 10 ≈ 6.38 tiles/s (+16%) · Level 21 ≈ 7.59 tiles/s (+38%). Knight speed scales slightly slower, so dragons gain ground at higher levels.

The 15 Wall Color Themes

The maze walls change color on every level and cycle through 15 unique themes. This visual variety also helps you recognize which level you are on at a glance — useful for tracking how close you are to the harder difficulty spikes.

Difficulty Tiers Explained

Levels 1–3 — Forgiving

Long scatter phases (7 seconds each), generous frightened duration (13–11 seconds), Elroy mode only activates at 20–30 dots remaining. These levels are designed for learning the dragon patterns and the maze layout.

Levels 4–5 — Moderate

Scatter phases start shrinking, frightened duration drops to 9 seconds, and Elroy mode activates at 40 dots. The dragons are noticeably faster. Players need to start using power pellets strategically rather than reflexively.

Levels 6–10 — Hard

Only two short scatter phases before permanent chase. Frightened duration drops to 8 seconds. Dragon speed is 18–26% faster than Level 1. The final scatter phases disappear entirely. Survival requires constant movement and active tunnel usage.

Levels 11–20 — Very Hard

Frightened duration fluctuates between 8 and 12 seconds — the classic arcade table uses non-linear values here, which Run Dragon Run faithfully reproduces. Dragon speed is 28–38% faster. Elroy mode activates early. Only experienced players who have memorized dragon patterns survive consistently.

Levels 21+ — Nightmare

Power pellets stop working entirely — dragons never turn blue. Permanent chase mode. Dragon speed is 38%+ faster than Level 1. Elroy mode at 40 dots. This is pure survival: eat orbs, avoid dragons, use tunnels. There is no power pellet to save you. Only the most skilled players reach this far.

Bonus Treasures by Level

A bonus treasure appears twice per level and changes with each level. The treasure type and value increase as follows:

LevelTreasurePoints
1Cherry100
2Strawberry300
3Peach500
4Apple700
5Melon1,000
6–7Melon1,000
8Galaxian Ship2,000
9Bell3,000
10+Key5,000

The treasure appears in the same spot each time — directly above the ghost house. It stays on the board for a few seconds and then disappears, so you have to be quick to grab it during a safe window.
